The United Methodist Church was given the responsibility to maintain this illustrious school of theology, along with other 12 theological schools.

History

The Methodist Theological School was formed on 24-25 April 1839 by a handful of Methodist ministers who met at the Old Bromfield Street Church in Boston.  Osmon C. Baker was director of the Newbury Seminary following its foundation, and launched a course of Biblical Studies at the seminary. Later, the seminary was renamed as the Newbury Biblical Institute. In 1850, the school, which was later on known as the Concord Biblical Institute, graduated its first class.

After 20 years, the Trustees of the Concord Biblical Institute bought 30 acres of land in Massachusetts with a clear goal of relocation. During 1967, the institute changed its formal address to 23 Pinkney Street in Boston and also the Massachusetts Charter renamed the institute as the Boston Theological Institute. However, later on this name was again changed to Boston University School of Theology.
