Voice Opposition to Expanded Gambling

Massachusetts Catholic Conference

May 14, 2009

The Massachusetts Catholic Conference believes that it is not “good economic policy” to increase the Commonwealth’s income at a cost that involves the personal well being of its citizens. Although we disagree with Governor Deval Patrick’s overall support for expanded gambling, we agree with his assessment of gambling’s harms, made in a statement on September 17, 2007.

·        “Expanded gambling causes additional hardships for individuals and families”.

·        “Gambling addiction increases within the areas surrounding a casino”.

·        “Increases in drug and alcohol abuse, personal bankruptcy and even domestic violence have been documented”.

·        The “impact on an affected individual or families can be devastating.”

Governor Patrick and key members of his administration will be holding a series of town hall meetings over the next two weeks. Volunteers are needed to attend these forums, voice opposition to expanded gambling, and help distribute educational material.

The meetings will be held throughout the Commonwealth May 11, 2009 through May 21, 2009. The specific locations and dates can be found at the following website, Governor's Forums.

Any person who is conveniently located near one of the town hall meetings is encouraged to attend. Interested participants are invited to contact Michael Falcone, the Program Coordinator for Casino Free Mass. He can be reached by email, Michael@casinofreemass.org or by phone 617-990-6712.

Thank you for your consideration.
