Thank you!

 The House’s Fiscal Year 2010 budget is complete. Now it’s time to focus on the Senate

Thank you for contacting your State Representative and asking them to support the amendment filed by Representative John J. Binienda (D-Worcester) Chair of the House Committee on Rules and Representative James J. O'Day (D-West Boylston) to restore funding for the Dismas House (Line Item 8900-0001). The amendment was adopted. As a result, $80,000 was restored to the public safety line-item, with $50,000 for the Dismas House.

The Dismas House is a supportive community that provides transitional housing and services to former prisoners. People living in the house pay part of the operating expenses. Both a city-sponsored study and a three-year tracking project of recidivism rates found that Dismas House residents stabilize and succeed at rates between 69-75% (The general prison population succeeds at rate of 25%);

Your advocacy during the House debate made a difference. Your voice during the Senate debate may be crucial.

Next Steps:

1.) Call your State Representative.

·        Thank them if they supported the amendment filed by Representative Binienda and Representative O’Day that restored funding for the Dismas House (Line Item 8900-0001).

2.) Dialogue with your State Senator

·        The Senate Ways and Means Committee is expected to release its version of the FY’10 budget the week of May 11th. According to Senate Ways and Means Chairman Steven Panagiotakos the Senate budget will be based on a revenue projection approximately $1 billion less than the House Ways and Means’ initial revenue figure because of the rapid deterioration in tax collections, setting the stage for major cuts in spending.

·        We will be back in touch with you when the Senate Ways and Means budget is released if action is needed on this issue.

3.) To learn who your state legislators are, go to www.wheredoivotema.com or call the main State House number at 617-722-2000
